An amazing work of art is situated on the Albula Line, half way between Chur and St. Moritz: 142 metres long, 65 metres high, and supported by five stone pillars – the Landwasser Viaduct. You certainly need a little time to appreciate this masterpiece in all its glory. And the vantage point near Filisur is the perfect place to do just that. From 1 July to 31 August 2019, this can now be easily reached from Filisur station by choo choo train.

Move aside, here comes the «Landwasser-Express»! The bright red choo choo train transports passengers of all ages to the Landwasser Viaduct vantage point in just 30 minutes. Anyone who has a little change in their pockets can hop aboard. You get your ticket from the driver. He drives his passengers at a leisurely pace from Filisur station through the picturesque village in Graubünden. After leaving the village, passengers enjoy an idyllic trip along the two streams, Alvra and Landwasser, to the vantage point. You can hop on or hop off at any stop. Using a microphone and a PA system, the driver presents facts about the region for a total of 36 passengers when the train is full.

The «Landwasser-Express» stops at the foot of the Landwasser Viaduct. From here you have an impressive view of the Rhaetian Railway’s landmark. There is plenty of time to marvel at this masterpiece: how the stonework made of natural dolomite lime rises over the wild valley and how the red trains on the bridge disappear straight into the tunnel in the vertical cliff-face. Nature, culture and technology are uniquely combined in this landscape and have proudly boasted the UNESCO World Heritage seal since 2008. Once the passengers have soaked up a whole range of impressions, the «Landwasser-Express» takes them back to Filisur station again.

Landwasser Viaduct

The viaduct at Filisur spans the Landwasser Valley and leads directly into a tunnel. The construction of the three main pillars in 1901/02 was an outstanding architectural feat, considering that the viaduct was built using only two cranes and without scaffolding. This is the most spectacular landmark on the Rhaetian Railway and it has become famous the world over.

An unusual perspective

Experience the impressive Landwasser Viaduct from an unusual perspective: on a trip in our «Landwasser-Express». This will take you from Filisur station, via the Islas camping site to the foot of the Landwasser Viaduct where you can marvel at this masterpiece of civil engineering in all its glory. If you’re lucky, you’ll even see a train going across the viaduct. After a short stop at the vantage point, the trip continues, returning to its starting point, Filisur station. If you want, you can get off at one of the many stops on the way and enjoy some of the natural landscape on foot. But it's worth staying on board as our driver will tell you lots of fascinating facts about Filisur and the world-famous Landwasser Viaduct.

Filisur

In Filisur, a village very much in the Engadin architectural style, the Albula Valley branches off towards Davos and the inner Albula Valley. In the past, the elongated village was shaped by traffic over the pass. With its houses in the typical Engadin style, Filisur is seen as the lowest Engadin village. The arrangement of the houses on streets and squares, the broad magnificently decorated façades with the characteristic entrances, bay windows and window gratings shape the character of the village. Equally impressive is the reformed church, which can be seen for miles and was built on a rocky promontory in 1495. Visitors here will see simple, late Gothic reticulated vaulting and unusually fine, beautifully coloured murals.
