Information on railway operations

Starting from 6 November 2020 the Italian administrative region Lombardy implements extensive restrictions on public life due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. All restaurants and shops must be closed. Leaving the train station in Tirano upon arrival from Switzerland is not permitted anymore. Due to the current situation in Lombardy, an extensive relaxation of these restrictions is not expected. Therefore, the Bernina Express will only run between Chur and Campocologno (Swiss-Italian border station) starting from 6 November 2020. We recommend our customers to board the trains in Poschiavo or Le Prese.

The start of the season for Bernina Express trains 950/955 and 973/976 as well as the Bernina Express Bus has also been postponed from 8 May to 3 July 2021. Journeys booked until then on the affected trains as well as on the Bernina Express Bus will be cancelled and refunded free of charge. Groups are getting informed of the cancellation of the trip by a separate email from the Rhaetian Railway’s Railservice.

Mandatory use of masks

Since 6 July 2020, all customers must wear a mask to protect their fellow passengers and themselves during their journey in trains, buses, trams, ships and cable cars. The only exceptions to the mask requirement are children up to the age of twelve years and persons who are not allowed to wear a mask for medical reasons.

Eating and drinking is still allowed on public transport - during this time the mask can be removed. In order to protect fellow travellers and themselves, customers are responsible for ensuring that they are equipped with masks when travelling by public transport.

Hygiene and safety

The protection of passengers and employees continues to be the top priority. The cleaning of the trains has been intensified. Several times a day, contact surfaces and surfaces such as handrails, buttons, tables, armrests and toilets are cleaned and disinfected. Cleaning is also carried out more frequently at the stations. Passengers also have the opportunity to wash their hands in the open WC facilities at the stations in accordance with the regulations. Disinfectant dispensers have been installed at staffed stations. In accordance with the FOPH guidelines, a hygiene mask must be worn for public transport from the age of 12. Passengers are responsible for having and wearing a protective mask. Passengers buy tickets online, in apps or from vending machines and pay contactlessly at ticket counters. The protection concept of public transport is based on the personal responsibility and solidarity of the travellers. If they adhere to the measures described above, they can travel safely on Swiss public transport.
