Stage: Zermatt – St. Moritz

Travel aboard the Glacier Express, the slowest express train in the world, from Zermatt – home to the impressive Matterhorn – to St. Moritz – playground of the rich and famous. Your journey will take you 2,033 metres above sea level over the Oberalp Pass, the highest point on your Glacier Express panoramic journey, past the world-famous Disentis Abbey to Chur, the capital of the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Once you have passed the Rhine by Reichenau-Tamins, you will travel through the Domleschg region, past Thusis. The section of the route from Thusis, with its bridges and railway tunnels, has been a UNESCO World Heritage since 2008 and is guaranteed to be a thrilling, picturesque journey featuring a world-famous highlight – the Landwasser Viaduct – which you will cross shortly before Filisur. Passing through the Albula Tunnel by Preda – and ultimately Samedan – you will soon reach your destination for this stage of the journey: St. Moritz.

Stage: St. Moritz – Tirano – Lugano

Set off from St. Moritz aboard the Bernina Express, which will bring you further south to Tirano. Your journey will take you past Pontresina over the roof of the Rhaetian Railway 2,253 metres above sea level to Ospizio Bernina. Enjoy the unforgettable view of the Palü Glacier, Bernina Range, Bergamasque Alps and all of Valposchiavo on a quick stop on Alp Grüm. The Bernina Express will then continue towards the valley floor, past Le Prese and the turquoise-coloured Lago di Poschiavo. On approaching Tirano, you will cross the Brusio Circular Viaduct – one of many outstanding engineering achievements along the UNESCO World Heritage route. Once in Tirano, you will be able to soak up the Mediterranean charm of Italy while enjoying some of the finest dishes Italian cuisine has to offer. Reinvigorated, your journey will continue by Bernina Express Bus* back to Switzerland, namely Lugano, where you will have the opportunity to continue your «Grand Train Tour of Switzerland» outside of the RhB network to Lucerne.

Kreisviadukt Brusio im Winter

The Brusio Circular Viaduct is a true masterpiece of bridge engineering on the Bernina Line. It was built to limit the gradient of the line to just 7 per cent.
