Capricorn railcars

On the go both individually and together

The Rhaetian Railway is acquiring 56 new separable multiple-unit trains from Stadler Rail. The first separable multiple-unit trains will be put into operation during the course of 2020 between Landquart and Davos (Filisur) following successful on-track trials and training. As soon as enough vehicles are available, separable multiple-unit trains are expected to start running between Landquart, Klosters and Davos/St. Moritz in 2022.

The procurement of these separable multiple-unit trains is the biggest-ever acquisition of rolling stock in the history of the Rhaetian Railway. The order consists of 56 four-part multiple-unit trains. The order volume amounts to 534 million Swiss francs.

Equipped with automatic couplers, these multi-unit trains suppose a significant update of the RhB's fleet of rolling stock, and promise to increase greatly the productivity of the Rhaetian Railway overall.

Each of these 76.44 metre-long separable multiple-unit trains has 35 seats in first class, 129 seats in second class and two places for wheelchair users. The trains offer a high level of passenger comfort, while fulfilling the requirements of Switzerland's disability equality laws. The wide doors are designed to allow passengers to get on an off quickly and easily at each stop, and the high proportion of low-floor accesses also contributes to ease of entry and exit. These separable multiple-unit trains offer sufficient space for bicycles, skis, sports equipment, prams and luggage.

Separable configuration
Each multiple-unit train can be divided into sections. The RhB’s initial use of the concept will entail the operation of two to four multiple units, coupled together as a single train to run from Landquart to Klosters Platz, for example. The train will then divide into two trains at Klosters Platz to allow one train to continue on from Klosters Platz to St. Moritz, while the second one runs from Klosters Platz to Davos. When running in the opposite direction, the two parts of the separable multiple-unit train will be coupled back together automatically at Klosters Platz to continue on to Landquart as a single train.

Special features of the Capricorn railcar

Fascinating
Passengers are given a completely new rail experience. Front cameras transmit the view from the driver’s cab into the passenger compartment. Sliding windows allow an unobstructed view and the possibility to take photos incorporating the width and depth of the breathtaking landscape.
Safe
Fire alarm and fire-fighting systems as well as video surveillance throughout the train ensure that passengers feel safe. Collision protection in compliance with the latest standards also ensures the safety of the train personnel.
Comfortable
The Capricorn features modern air-conditioning which automatically detects the CO2 content of the air. A bright and passenger-friendly interior makes the train journey a pleasurable experience. Both WCs have changing tables to make travelling particularly pleasant for families.
Caters to impaired mobility
The Capricorn railcar ensures premium travel comfort for people with disabilities. Three low-floor entrances with a width of 1.2 metres and sliding steps, two spaces for wheelchairs, a wheelchair-accessible WC and tactile inscriptions make the journey easier. This fulfils the requirements of the Swiss Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
Multifunctional
Whether you’re an avid cyclist, a family with a pushchair or a traveller with lots of luggage – there's plenty of storage space on the Capricorn. The large multifunctional compartments can accommodate up to twelve bicycles in the summer and several pieces of winter sports equipment in the winter.
Local
The Graubünden cantonal coat of arms adorns the front of the vehicle – and is even illuminated in the dark. RhB thus demonstrates its commitment to the canton of Graubünden. The interior of the train has kept the same style as its predecessors, the Allegra railcars and articulated Alvra train: the materials wood and stone are interpreted in a modern way.
Modern
Each compartment is equipped with two sockets and each coach has a modern passenger information system with wide flat screens. With its modern driver’s cab equipment, the Capricorn also scores points with train drivers.
