Albula Railway Museum

A journey through time to the railway pioneers

The Albula Railway Museum in Bergün guides railway enthusiasts and families through the history of the railway in Graubünden. Old railway equipment, films and models enthral visitors. A simulator lets you drive the legendary Crocodile locomotive along the Albula Line yourself.

600 exhibits from more than a century of railway history pay tribute to the pioneering achievements that took place in Graubünden, to the people that shaped the railway – and to the landscape that was shaped by it. Decommissioned station clocks, historical documents and engineering plans illustrate the history and importance of the spectacular UNESCO World Heritage route between Thusis and Tirano.

Children and railway fans can press buttons and switches in the driving simulator of the Crocodile engine, not only amateur model-builders will be amazed by the model workshop and everyone will be impressed by the temporary and interactive exhibitions. The Albula Railway Museum is right next to Bergün railway station on the Albula Line from Chur to St. Moritz. The exhibition space takes up 1,300 square metres.

If you hadn't realised it before, the Railway Adventure Trail Albula will bring home to you the meaning of Swiss pioneering work: between Preda and Bergün you get a close-up view of mountains, a roaring mountain brook and viaducts.

Find out the story behind the Rhaetian Railway; there are plenty of thrilling exhibitions to help you do just that.

Crocodile driving simulator

Take a virtual ride through the Albula Valley in the original Crocodile CC 407 engine. Push real buttons and pull real levers to set the legendary locomotive in motion – on a virtual journey through the Albula Valley. For more than 50 years, the engine officially numbered 407 reliably went about its business. Now, anyone interested can have a go from Tuesday to Sunday between 13.15 and 15.30.

Visual

Topography simulator

Two topography models on a scale of 1:20 000 and 1:10 000 replicate the landscape of the Albula Valley in miniature format. Archive picture material, texts and 3D animations explain in layman's terms how the routing of the railway through the terrain was planned.

Visual

Museum tour for children

The mechanical ticket validators show the way: the youngsters punch their tickets at the various stations and solve tasks, practise their building skills on a model viaduct or serve passengers at the ticket office.

Visual

Model railway

The model looks amazingly like the original. Bernhard Tarnutzer's model railway shows the buildings, viaducts and tunnels of the RhB as they were from 1950 to 1960 on a scale of 1:45. The man himself can often be found in the open workshop and is happy to talk about how he built the model. The model trains generally operate in the afternoon.

Visual

Exhibition depot

The Railway Museum's continually growing collection comprises more than 600 original exhibits. Memorabilia from RhB operations are incorporated into the permanent exhibition or made accessible to visitors in the exhibition depot or storeroom on the lower floor. An Eldorado for real railway fans.

Museum outdoor attractions
