History

Providing a fascinatingly different way to travel since 1889

The history of the Rhaetian Railway is a piece of Graubünden identity – and a chapter full of pioneering spirit. What began in 1889 with the first line from Landquart to Klosters is now a 385-kilometre network in the middle of the Alps. Over the decades, masterpieces such as the Albula Tunnel and the world-famous Landwasser Viaduct have been created. Our roots shape us and form the foundation for the future.

Legal form and shareholders

Rooted in the region

Rhaetian Railway Inc is constituted as a joint stock company under private law – with strong public owners. The canton of Graubünden and the Swiss Confederation together hold more than 90 per cent of the shares, thereby ensuring the long-term development of RhB in the interests of the region. At the same time, investments by municipalities and private shareholders enable broad-based support. Transparency and clear rules form the basis of what we do.
