Rhaetian Railway is currently in a far-reaching modernisation phase and has invested heavily in the renewal of its vehicle fleet and infrastructure facilities in recent years. The new rolling stock consists increasingly of railcars and articulated trains, which are no longer separated during maintenance, which is why the existing workshops have to be adapted to the new rolling stock. The changes affect not only the workshops themselves, but also large areas in and around Landquart station.
The major project “Renovation and conversion of Landquart Station” consists of various interrelated sub-projects, which are being carried out in stages. The first construction work began in May 2018. An investment volume of more than CHF 700 million has been estimated for this major project.
Current sub-project
Expansion of track and platform facilities – Phase B
The track and Perron facilities are currently being upgraded as part of Phase B. At the heart of the project is the shared central Perron, designed to make changing between RhB and SBB trains more convenient and quicker. The shared Perron allows for the addition of one extra track with a Perron for each railway. This lays the foundation for the planned half-hourly service. In addition, the track and Perron facilities are being modernised and, where necessary, extended to accommodate the RhB’s new fleet of rolling stock.
The Perrons will be fitted with new, uniform roofs on which translucent photovoltaic systems will be installed. The new installations create a pleasant, bright atmosphere and, thanks to their large surface area, make a significant contribution to sustainable electricity generation. The new Perrons will be connected by a wide and well-lit pedestrian underpass. For the goods railway, receiving and shunting tracks will be extended on both lines. To ensure the new tracks can be operated safely, a new shared railway engineering building will also be constructed at the northern end of the Perron.
