Training to become a train traffic controller is possible via an apprenticeship as a public transport specialist or as a career changer with a second qualification.

Training as a career changer

The training programme starts twice a year, lasts 12 months and takes place at the Rhaetian Railway's operations centre in Landquart. Experienced train dispatchers teach you the basics of rail transport through a combination of theoretical and practical training. Structure and schedule of the training programme Right from the start of the training programme, you will be assigned to irregular shifts in line with your level of training. You will be accompanied by a mentor throughout the entire training programme.

  • Phase 1: Basic training covering the general fundamentals of rail transport

  • Phase 2: Correct securing of line closures and work sites.

An interim examination takes place approximately halfway through the training programme. Passing the interim examination is a prerequisite for starting the third and final phase of the training programme.

  • Phase 3: Incident management and exam preparation

A final examination takes place at the end of the training programme.

Development opportunities

After completing your training and passing your final examination, you will be employed as an independent train dispatcher and gain your own experience.

Later, you will also have the opportunity to work in other areas of the Rhaetian Railway:

  • Taking on departmental tasks

  • Assisting in the training of train dispatchers

  • Operations supervisor

  • Job splitting in other areas of the RhB

  • Opportunities for promotion to management positions

Requirements for a career change

To switch careers and become a train traffic controller, you need the following:

  • Completed at least three-year vocational training (EFZ) or high school diploma

  • High level of safety and quality awareness

  • Willingness to work irregular hours

  • Structured and reliable way of working

  • Analytical skills paired with an eye for the big picture

  • Strong ability to work under pressure
