The Rhaetian Railway is focussing on the two fields of action "Reducing environmental impact" and "Saving energy". Strategies, projects and campaigns in these two fields of action are specifically promoted and supported. The aim is to improve nature conservation and climate protection. With this focus, the Rhaetian Railway ensures compliance and fulfils the expectations of stakeholders in terms of environmental sustainability. The protection of natural landscapes also strengthens the unique brand of the Rhaetian Railway. The development of the other areas of action is monitored in order to be able to react quickly in the event of changes.

Energy saving
In the area of energy, the Rhaetian Railway can achieve the greatest effect for climate protection, as the energy requirement is very high and continues to rise due to the increasing number of train kilometres and the equipment of the trains. Measures such as the automation of point heating systems, the optimisation of building heating systems and energy-saving measures in vehicles should lead to a disproportionately low increase in the Rhaetian Railway's overall energy requirements despite the increase in train kilometres and more comfortable equipment in the trains. In addition to increasing energy efficiency, the focus is on reducing emissions. The use of renewable energies, in particular hydropower, plays a central role in this. Accordingly, the Rhaetian Railway obtains all the electricity for its properties and electrically powered traction units entirely from hydropower in order to minimise CO₂ emissions and make an active contribution to climate protection.

Reduce environmental impact
