The Capricorn – seen it yet?

RhB is working intensively on replacing its rolling stock: the Graubünden rail company placed an order with Stadler Rail in 2016 for 36 separable multiple-unit trains, five of which have now arrived at RhB.

The new additions go by the name of “Capricorn”, the term people from Graubünden use for ibexes. With an order volume of CHF 361 million, the new Capricorn railcars are the largest rolling stock procurement project in the history of RhB. The multiple-unit trains are being used in Graubünden for the first time. And RhB is getting younger: thanks to the 36 Capricorns, well over 100 vehicles can be taken out of service, reducing the average age of the RhB fleet from 29 to 22 years.

Modern, comfortable and modernised to cater to people with mobility difficulties

The interior of the Capricorn has kept the same style as its predecessors Allegra and Alvra: the materials wood and stone are interpreted in a modern way. The air-conditioning is state of the art: the Capricorn can detect the CO2 content of the air automatically. Each compartment is equipped with two sockets and each coach has a passenger information system with wide flat screens. In addition, every train passenger can look over the driver's shoulder: front cameras transmit the view from the driver's cab into the passenger compartment.

Both WCs have changing tables to make travelling particularly pleasant for families with children. And there is also plenty of storage space: the large multifunctional compartments can accommodate up to twelve bicycles or several pieces of winter sports equipment. Three low-floor entrances with a width of 1.2 metres and sliding steps, two spaces for wheelchairs, a wheelchair-accessible WC and tactile inscriptions make train travel easier even for people with disabilities.

The first five vehicles have arrived at RhB and are currently being put into service, with employees going through training sessions. As soon as the operational situation permits, the first operational tests with passengers will start.

From December 2020, the first Capricorns are due to be deployed on the Landquart – Davos – Filisur route. As soon as sufficient vehicles are available, Landquart – Klosters – Davos / St. Moritz will also be included on their routes. In the future, the Capricorn multiple-unit trains are to be used in Prättigau to Davos and Filisur, in Engadin and in Upper Graubünden (Ilanz / Disentis).

Interested parties will have the opportunity to inspect the new vehicles in autumn – providing the coronavirus situation allows: on 12/13 September 2020 the RhB Railway Festival is due to take place in Landquart with a christening ceremony for the first Capricorn multiple-unit trains.

The separable Capricorn

The Capricorn is a multiple-unit train. This kind of train can be divided into several separate parts. This will allow RhB to achieve half-hourly intervals on single-track lines without costly line upgrades, which means a significant increase in productivity for rail traffic. In concrete terms, the Capricorn train composition consists of one drive car, one control car and two normal coaches. Up to four compositions can be connected, which results in a train length of about 300 metres – seventh heaven for all railway fans. The combined train compositions then run as one train for example from Landquart to Klosters Platz. The train is then divided into two at Klosters Platz: while one part of the train travels on to Davos Platz, the other part continues on to St. Moritz. In the opposite direction, the two multiple-unit trains are automatically reconnected at Klosters Platz and then run together to Landquart.
