A journey of discovery through the Swiss canton of Graubünden

Wow, a child’s ticket from Clà Ferrovia! Our five-year-old son’s eyes light up. Followed by a shy «thank you». Once again, the train guard is good to us. With RhB, exciting excursions are just a train ride away.

Arosa – the all-rounder

We particularly enjoy visiting Arosa with our five-year-old son and three-year-old daughter. In Chur, we board the bear sanctuary carriage and, thanks to the many little books about bears, we’re already immersed in the topic. Here we can also make some noise, since we’re travelling with like-minded families. We’re counting the countless tunnels until it’s time to say: «Last stop Arosa». From here, we can choose between three family destinations.

The Squirrel Trail, which starts above Arosa railway station, is also easily accessible for pushchairs. With a little luck, the squirrels will eat out of our hand – they prefer unpeeled nuts. After a walk of around 40 minutes on a flat stretch, we reach a wonderful forest clearing with a barbecue spot, playground and toilet.

The Squirrel Trail

Bear fans can take the Arosa-Weisshorn cable car from Arosa station directly to the bear sanctuary. A highlight for the whole family, especially since the addition of the new adventure trail and its eight viewing platforms. The kids marvel at Amelia, Meimo and Co. before spending time watching the explanatory videos showing the bears being transported. Then we’re all hungry. We enjoy the afternoon in the lovingly designed playground at the Weisshorn-Bahn mountain station, where parents can enjoy a nice cup of coffee on the restaurant terrace.

Arosa has another highlight in store for children who are able to hike a little further (or for parents who can carry their children in a carrier backpack): a hike to Lake Schwelli or even to Lake Älpli. Insider’s tip: take the Hörnli Express from Innerarosa to the Hörnligrat mountain station and back then walk slightly downhill to Lake Älpli (approx. 1.5 hours with children, sturdy footwear required).

A tour of discovery in the Albula Valley

Our Graubünden journey of discovery continues in the Albula Valley: from Chur we take the Interregio train to Preda. The letters «FA» in the timetable tell us that this is a «family carriage with play area». This means us parents can also relax and even enjoy 10 minutes of reading the newspaper undisturbed. While our daughter is having fun on the slide, our son has crawled into the space below and is listening to the audio plays of Clà Ferrovia – the RhB children’s conductor. The next highlight follows when the train guard arrives: their very own child’s ticket.

We prepare for our arrival in Filisur in the photo car by lowering the windows and experiencing the impressive crossing over the Landwasser Viaduct (and of course dad takes the opportunity to take some photos he can post on Instagram ...).

In winter, the famous sledging trail from Preda to Bergün beckons. This is relatively flat and therefore easy to do with smaller children. Those who are a little more daring can turn off to the Darlux chairlift at the end of the trail, where a much faster sledging trail awaits. A ticket is required to use the sledging trail, which can easily be obtained from the conductor, when hiring a sledge at Preda station or from the ticket machine (after approx. 1 km of the trail).

Sledging

The Railway Adventure Trail along an almost identical trail is as enjoyable as sledging in winter. We take a gentle stroll downhill, under the historic viaducts, and marvel at the trains crossing the bridges every now and again. Those who still have the energy can carry on to the Albula Railway Museum at Bergün station for a greater insight into the railway history of the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Tip for young and young-at-heart railway fans: try out the driving simulator in the crocodile locomotive.

Deer watching in the Swiss National Park

Us parents want to experience the beauty of the Swiss National Park in the Engadin this autumn – but how can we get our kids excited about it? The Express Parc Naziunel yellow choo-choo train ultimately wins them over. The slow train takes us from Scuol station via S-chanf station to the Varusch park hut. At the last stop, our hike into Val Trupchun begins. Those with smaller children are best taking a carrier backpack, as this involves walking slightly uphill for around 90 minutes.

Choo-choo train

Suddenly we reach a beautiful clearing where we can join other nature lovers in observing the deer rutting. It’s time to unpack our binoculars and look for them. After some time, we spot the first deer high up on the slope. And prick up our ears: the stags vie for the attention of the does with a loud roar. Tip: the best time to observe rutting is from mid-September to early October.

And if the weather is bad?

There is plenty to discover in the valleys of Graubünden as well as in the capital Chur, especially when the weather is not ideal for excursions. While mum is relaxing shopping in Chur’s old town, we visit the Graubünden Natural History Museum, which is within walking distance of the train station. Here we can expand our knowledge of wolves, ibexes and marmots and marvel at the many native stuffed animals. Tip: look at the special exhibitions.

After just under an hour, all the children want to do is go to the pool. The Chur bus takes us to the indoor and outdoor pool Obere Au, where we can let off steam on the slide and in the many different pools.
