Albula Line

Through tunnels and over viaducts

From Thusis, the RhB makes its way through helical tunnels and over viaducts as it climbs the Albula Valley towards St. Moritz. Harmoniously embedded in the landscape, the line is a monument to the pioneering days of railway-building and has UNESCO World Heritage status.

Even today, the 62-kilometre Albula Line is still considered a masterpiece in terms of railway engineering and routing. The RhB opened the spectacular section of track between Thusis and St. Moritz in 1903, after just five years' construction. The red train climbs over 1,000 metres in altitude – thanks to the Solis Viaduct, Landwasser Viaduct and the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda – without rack-and-pinion technology.

Away from the track, you can hike through the unspoilt mountain world in the Ela Nature Park, on the Railway Adventure Trail Albula or visit the Albula Railway Museum in Bergün. In winter, you can go sledging down the winding trail from Preda to Bergün.

You'll experience numerous highlights on the Albula Line from breathtaking nature to the impressive viaducts.

Albula/Bernina UNESCO World Heritage route

The Albula and Bernina section of track is a masterpiece in terms of civil engineering and routing. Landscape and railway blend into one: in wide radiuses, ingenious man-made structures punctuate rugged valleys. The Landwasser Viaduct, the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda and the Brusio Circular Viaduct all stand testimony to the early, pioneering days of the railway.

Albula Railway Museum

The Albula Railway Museum in Bergün takes railway fans on a journey into the past. A simulator lets visitors drive the legendary Crocodile locomotive along the Albula Line themselves. Railway enthusiasts and families will be fascinated by the old stamps, films and models.

Palpuogna Lake

In 2007, the Swiss voted the Lai da Palpuogna as «the most beautiful place in Switzerland». From Preda, the mountain lake can be reached on foot within an hour. Gaze deep into the water and be mesmerized by the subtle gradations of colour. The majestic peaks of Piz Ela and Piz Rugnux are reflected in the clear mountain water. Fire pits are ready and waiting for a BBQ in summer.

Catering

Sometimes life makes us thirsty. Sometimes we just have a huge appetite for life itself. Neither situation poses a problem with the Rhaetian Railway. Selected regional trains operate with the nostalgic Gourmino dining car attached.
