RhB in Northern Germany

A friendly “Moin Moin” as they say up north! Rhaetian Railway is not only out and about in Graubünden but also in thousands of model railway exhibitions all over the world. And that is how RhB happens to be in Northern Germany.

When he was just 13, he fell in love with RhB and first garden railway products based on models from Graubünden found their way to the Altes Land area of Lower Saxony. It all started with the Rhaetian Crocodile, operating number 413. Matching coaches followed and finally a first train was created. His passion grew and further engines and coaches followed. Other historical vehicles as well as ultra-modern rolling stock, such as the Allegra railcars, have now also found their way up to Northern Germany.

It is certainly not easy to recreate the RhB network surrounded by mountain ranges in the flat area along the banks of the Elbe. And so, over the course of several years, a lot of effort was put into creating a small mountain world. The necessary stone was procured from a quarry in the Harz Mountains. And of course the whole setup would not be complete without the typical masoned RhB viaducts. The Brusio Circular Viaduct was joined by the Solis Viaduct.

Today, the garden railway based on RhB totals around 300 metres of track with lots of space for long RhB trains from various epochs. Care has been taken to ensure that the trains are put together in a way that is appropriate to particular eras and, as far as possible, to the original.

But it is not just the model RhB that is fascinating; the large original never stops being a highlight. You certainly feel at home in the Upper Engadin in the triangle between Samedan/Pontresina/St. Moritz. Every year, we plan several holidays to the area, which is wonderful whatever the season.

But what makes RhB so fascinating and why is this railway so attractive? That’s easy: RhB has outstanding staff that are always friendly, offers both historical and modern rolling stock, and of course the scenery quite rightly makes RhB one of the most attractive railway networks in the world.

I love travelling on RhB and also appreciate the fact that I sometimes get the chance to take a look behind the scenes thanks to my membership in the RhB Club. Interested? Then keep revisiting the blog to find out more surprising details about RhB.

All the very best from Northern Germany
