Learning experiences: Are you planning an excursion or a school trip in the Swiss canton of Graubünden and looking for attractive destinations? Then let yourself be inspired. The RhB has clever ideas both on and off the rails.
A day out with the RhB is a clever way for school classes to mix learning with fun. The train journey through the impressive landscape of Graubünden is an experience in itself. The castle of Tarasp gives pupils a taste of what life was like in the Middle Ages. They can discover the flora and fauna of the Alps in the National Park near Zernez. The Albula Railway Museum uses multimedia to make the history of the RhB come alive. The Railway Adventure Trail Albula sends pupils on the (meter-gauge) track of railway history, taking them on foot along the famous UNESCO World Heritage route in the Albula Valley.
The Albula Railway Museum in Bergün takes people of all ages on a journey into the past. A simulator lets visitors drive the legendary Crocodile locomotive along the Albula Line themselves. Pupils and their teachers will be fascinated by the old stamps, films and models.
The Albula Valley is dominated by engineering structures. The Railway Adventure Trail Albula leads from Preda to Filisur, covering some 21 kilometres. Over its three stages you get a close-up view of viaducts, mountains and a roaring mountain brook. Information panels provide background information on the UNESCO World Heritage route.
A physics lesson with a difference: The Green Power Trail between Ospizio Bernina and the Glacier Garden of Cavaglia lets you see how electricity is generated – and reveals why the RhB is closely linked with power production in the Bernina area.
Suitable for field trips: pupils set out with their binoculars or field glasses. The National Park in Lower Engadin provides a safe haven for ibex, chamois, deer and marmots. You can find out everything you need to know about the flora and fauna of Switzerland's largest protected area in the National Park Centre at Zernez.
Perched on a 100-metre-high rock, the white fortress watches over the Lower Engadin. Its 1,000-year-old walls are reflected mysteriously in the waters of the lake below. A guided tour of the Medieval castle will take you back to a time when the lord of the castle was all-powerful.
