Our partner railway: Mariazell Railway

The Austrian Mariazell Railway has become a partner of RhB this year. But what is special about it and, importantly, where does it run?

Dieter Dubkowitsch, Market manager Germany and Austria, 26. November 2020

Austria’s longest narrow-gauge railway

From the Lower Austrian capital St. Pölten, the train travels through the picturesque Pielach Valley and the impressive Ötscher:Reich region to the Styrian pilgrimage destination of Mariazell: that is the route of the Mariazell Railway, Austria’s longest narrow-gauge railway. Under the umbrella of Niederösterreich Bahnen (Lower Austria Railways), it combines tradition and modernity and creates very special moments for its passengers.

The Mariazell Railway offers an experience for the whole family, from nostalgic and culinary trips to hiking trains and family experiences. The heart of the Mariazell Railway is the Operations Centre in Laubenbachmühle, which was set up at the apex between the mountain and valley sections. This is also where the Operations Control Centre is located. It coordinates the train operations of all Niederösterreich Bahnen railways.

Modern and with plenty of comfort

Every day, the modern carriages of the Himmelstreppe (Stairway to Heaven) bring hundreds of people to work or to the most beautiful destinations along the route and back again. Modern low-floor railcars with full air-conditioning, large entrances, barrier-free access and a passenger information system ensure a particularly high level of passenger comfort – in summer and winter alike. Sports enthusiasts can leave stress (and their cars) behind them and take the Stairway to Heaven to the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park, the Gemeindealpe Mitterbach ski resort as well as to numerous other hiking routes in the Mostviertel region.

Similarities with our Bernina Express

Connoisseurs will get their money’s worth in the panorama carriage of the Mariazell Railway. The generous panoramic glazing allows a great view of the passing landscape. Culinary delicacies, delicious regional breakfast variations and refreshments are served directly at your seat. Comfortable leather seats, fold-out wooden tables and reading lamps are just some of the amenities.

Like travelling in bygone days...

Nostalgia fans will get their money’s worth on a trip with the steam locomotive Mh.6. The iron lady has been huffing and puffing along the 84 kilometres of the Mariazell Railway since 1908. Cosy nostalgic carriages as well as the dining car and the first-class saloon car promise a train journey just like in imperial times.

A wide range of offers for families

The family adventure train Ötscherbär ensures fun for the whole family. In addition to the exciting ride over 19 viaducts and through 21 tunnels, the Ötscherbär adventure train is particularly impressive with its exciting family-friendly theme rides in the summer season and during Advent.

Monthly programme highlights ensure fun, games and plenty of variety. The lovingly restored carriages of the adventure train are pulled by the world’s oldest narrow-gauge electric locomotive – a truly memorable experience for passengers of all ages.

In the new play carriage, children will find the Ötscherbär who will be happy to play and draw with them. The dining car offers snacks and refreshments suitable for children as well as sweet and savoury regional delicacies.

In the observation car, enjoy the additional highlight of a train ride with convertible flair. A family trip on the adventure train Ötscherbär can be easily combined with a cycle tour because the cycle car is always on board.
