The Rhaetian Railway is a leading provider of leisure, commuter and freight transport services. With its unique mountain routes, UNESCO World Heritage status, Glacier Express and Bernina Express lines, it has been providing fascinating rail travel experiences throughout the Swiss canton of Graubünden for more than 125 years.
What began in 1889 with the opening of the line from Landquart to Klosters, has become a 384-kilometre network set amidst mountainous terrain. Back then, thanks to the initiative of Dutchman Willem-Jan Holsboer, the railway pioneers founded the Schmalspurbahn Landquart–Davos AG narrow-gauge railway company. In 1890, the first trains began running to Davos, followed later by services to St. Moritz, Disentis and Scuol. The merger with the Arosa and Bernina railway companies expanded the Rhaetian Railway's network of lines. The opening of the Vereina Tunnel in 1999 marks the most recent extension to the network.
Harmoniously embedded in the natural landscape, the rail lines and engineering structures all add to the charm of the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The Albula and Bernina lines between Thusis, St. Moritz and Tirano are recognised as towering achievements in railway engineering and have enjoyed UNESCO World Heritage status since 2008. The Bernina Express and Glacier Express, the Rhaetian Railway's flagship services, are globally renowned brands.
With its workforce of some 1,500 employees, the largest train operator in the Swiss Alps currently transports over two million commuters, eight million tourists and around 550,000 tons of freight each year.
