Interview: Schneefräse Xrot 95403/04
One of the world's small wonders: it takes a crew of up to ten RhB staff to pilot the Xrot 9213 steam-powered snow blower through the metre-high walls of snow along the Bernina Line. RhB passengers can get close to the action when snow-clearing operations are under way on the highest railway line through the Alps.
The RhB possesses the world's only steam-powered snow blower still in operation. A trip on this unique piece of railway history dating from 1910 promises to be an unforgettable experience for railway enthusiasts, who can experience the battle against the masses of snow close up. A member of staff will explain the technical processes - from lubrication to firing up.

This trip offers not only the fascinating snowplough but also further highlights such as lunch at the Restaurant Alp Grüm.
The Bernina Line between St. Moritz and Tirano links northern and southern Europe in a most impressive fashion. For over 100 years now it has been running past mountains, lakes and glaciers down to the palms of Valtellina. The famous panoramic route is a true landmark which has UNESCO World Heritage status.
The view from here is unforgettable: the Palü Glacier, Bernina Range, Bergamasque Alps and all Valposchiavo. On the sunny terrace of the Restaurant Alp Grüm, the owner serves genuine pizzocheri – the legendary buckwheat noodles – made to his own special recipe.
The highest point on the RhB is situated 2,253 metres above sea level. The watershed between Lago Bianco and Lej Nair is also the language frontier between the Romansh-speaking Engadine and the Italian-speaking Valposchiavo. The Bistro Albergo at the railway station was renovated in 2013 and serves tasty snacks at teatime.
