The Via Albula/Bernina is truly unique – a hiking route that criss-crosses the railway line. It lets you explore the Albula/Bernina UNESCO World Heritage route on foot in ten stages. And if your legs get tired, you can hop aboard an RhB train at any time.
Tackle the 131 kilometres of the UNESCO World Heritage route in any combination of ten stages. The long-distance hiking trail follows the Albula and Bernina lines from North to South or vice versa – passing through three language regions and cultures – and allows you to take a close-up look at bridges, viaducts, helical tunnels and old railway stations. The World Heritage RhB app and the Via Albula/Bernina hiking guide show you the way and will add a touch of spice to your hike with riveting information from the early days of railway engineering.
Choose one of our hiking packages: a 3-day hike on the Albula or Bernina trail, or a 5-day hike combining Albula and Bernina. Our specialists will organise your accommodation and transport of luggage between hotels. And with the railway pass included, you can hop on board whenever you feel like it. Lai da Palpuogna, "the most beautiful place in Switzerland", is just one of the many highlights on the Via Albula/Bernina.
The Albula and Bernina section of track is a masterpiece in terms of civil engineering and routing. Landscape and railway blend into one: in wide radiuses, ingenious man-made structures punctuate rugged valleys. The Landwasser Viaduct, the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda and the Brusio Circular Viaduct all stand testimony to the early, pioneering days of the railway.
In 2007, the Swiss voted the Lai da Palpuogna as «the most beautiful place in Switzerland». From Preda, the mountain lake can be reached on foot within an hour. Gaze deep into the water and be mesmerized by the subtle gradations of colour. The majestic peaks of Piz Ela and Piz Rugnux are reflected in the clear mountain water. Fire pits are ready and waiting for a BBQ in summer.
This hike takes you through the mighty mountain landscape of the Bernina Range up onto the 'rooftop' of the Rhaetian Railway. The Ospizio Bernina is situated at 2,253 metres above sea level. You can grab a refreshing coffee or tea in the freshly renovated Albergo bistro at the summit. In the distance you can see melt waters flowing down into the valley, adding a touch of colour: white for Lago Bianco, black for Lej Nair. Welcome to the Bernina watershed.
Gian and Giachen, the two Graubünden ibexes, also wandered along the Via Albula/Bernina – and filmed the excursion from a goats-eye perspective. You can follow Gian and Giachen on their tour at www.webwandern.ch, where you can also find out interesting facts about this long-distance trail and its attractions.
During the Ice Age some 11,000 years ago, the Palü Glacier formed a glacial hollow here. The glacier mills at Caviglia are ten metres deep and five metres wide. The ice has left behind a fascinating landscape full of natural sculptures, which can now be reached directly by rail. Experts will guide you round, providing fascinating details.
The hiking guide to the 10 stages of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina Landscapes is available for CHF 29.00 in the Railshop.
Let the mobile travel and hiking guide show you the way along the UNESCO World Heritage route by GPS: the smartphone app makes it possible – and also provides useful information about the Via Albula/Bernina, the railway, the places and sights worth seeing along the way.
