Bernina Express special offer

Panoramic journey for 2 people including lunch for just CHF 139.00

Cart VISA, Mastercard, Diners, JCB, Postfinance

From glaciers to palms: the highest railway line through the Alps is sure to take your breath away – for just CHF 139.00 when travelling with a partner or friend. You can travel from Chur to Tirano and back at this special price until 31 March 2019. The extra-large panoramic windows on the Bernina Express turn the mountain landscape of Graubünden into a cinematic experience.

The Bernina Express special offer runs from 25 October 2018 to 31 March 2019 and can also be booked as a two-day trip.

What to expect
No other railway line links north and south in such a spectacular fashion: the modern panoramic cars of the Bernina Express pass through 55 tunnels, cross 196 bridges and master gradients of up to 7 per cent with ease. The trip takes you from Chur (at 585 m above sea level) through the wild Albula Valley to the Upper Engadin and on up to Ospizio Bernina, the highest point at 2,253 m above sea level, before the train winds its way through Val Poschiavo to Tirano in Italy (429 m above sea level).

One highlight quickly follows another along the route: disorienting helical tunnels and dizzying viaducts in the Albula Valley, then the glaciers on the Bernina Pass you could almost reach out and touch. The Bernina Express travels along the entire 122 kilometres of the UNESCO World Heritage RhB route. The journey takes around four hours. This feast for the eyes is followed by a treat for the palate in Poschiavo, Le Prese or Tirano, where a plate of pizzocheri – buckwheat noodles – awaits. Enjoy this regional speciality before travelling back to Chur on the Bernina Express.

Nice to know
The stretch of track between Thusis and Tirano has UNESCO World Heritage status. Structures built a long time ago remain impressive today: e.g. the Landwasser Viaduct or the Brusio Circular Viaduct.

Albula/Bernina UNESCO World Heritage route

The Albula and Bernina section of track is a masterpiece in terms of civil engineering and routing. Landscape and railway blend into one: in wide radiuses, ingenious man-made structures punctuate rugged valleys. The Landwasser Viaduct, the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda and the Brusio Circular Viaduct all stand testimony to the early, pioneering days of the railway.

Landwasser Viaduct

The viaduct at Filisur spans the Landwasser Valley and leads directly into a tunnel. The construction of the three main pillars in 1901/02 was an outstanding architectural feat, considering that the viaduct was built using only two cranes and without scaffolding. This is the most spectacular landmark on the Rhaetian Railway and it has become famous the world over.

The valley in the southern Alps is a great place to enjoy lengthy hikes, leisurely strolls and fine regional specialities. Explore the historic heart of Poschiavo, centred around its pleasant piazza, and discover various aspects of the valley's history in one of the museums or the colourful "Spanish Quarter" built by returning emigrants. Soaking up the beautiful scenery at the Lago di Poschiavo makes a fitting end to a memorable trip.

Brusio Circular Viaduct

This viaduct turns round a 360-degree curve, lengthening the track so that it is possible to overcome the difference in altitude in the narrow Valposchiavo. The Brusio Circular Viaduct is considered the most spectacular construction on the Bernina Line.

Reaching the border: the little Italian town of Tirano is a customs post and the southern point of departure of the Bernina Line. The pilgrimage church of Madonna di Tirano dominates the romantic Old Town. The Italian way of life is reflected by the palazzi and ice cream.
