From glaciers to palms
Bernina Diavolezza Express: The Bernina Express package deal whisks travellers up to the Diavolezza mountain station at a dizzying altitude of 2,978 metres, where devilishly beautiful views of the legendary glacier world of the Bernina Range await.
The Bernina Express links language regions and cultures – not to mention UNESCO World Heritage sites. The observation-car train masters 55 tunnels, 196 bridges and gradients of up to 7 per cent with ease – and without the aid of a rack-and-pinion system.
The Diavolezza cable car takes you even higher. Enjoy the legendary view of the “Ballroom of the Alps”, including the Morteratsch Glacier, the Piz Palü and the Piz Bernina, from the panoramic terrace at an altitude of 2,978 metres.
Then head deep down into sunny Valposchiavo and the swaying palms of Italy in the modern panoramic car – everything is included in this spectacular multifaceted journey.
The Bernina Line between St. Moritz and Tirano links northern and southern Europe in a most impressive fashion. For over 100 years now it has been running past mountains, lakes and glaciers down to the palms of Valtellina. The famous panoramic route is a true landmark which has UNESCO World Heritage status.
Enjoy riding through the wild and romantic gorge. The three-kilometre-long passage in the Davos landscape takes you through rugged rock formations. The Bernina Express winds its way impressively over viaducts on one of Rhaetian Railway’s most beautiful routes.
The Albula and Bernina section of track is a masterpiece in terms of civil engineering and routing. Landscape and railway blend into one: in wide radiuses, ingenious man-made structures punctuate rugged valleys. The Landwasser Viaduct, the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda and the Brusio Circular Viaduct all stand testimony to the early, pioneering days of the railway.
Enjoy the impressive mountain landscape, from the Piz Palü to the Bellavista to the Piz Bernina – at 4,049 metres, the highest mountain in the Eastern Alps. The viewing platform at the Diavolezza mountain station offers a unique panorama of the glacier world of the Bernina Range. Work up an appetite admiring the view then treat yourself to the culinary delights of the mountain restaurant.
The valley in the southern Alps is a great place to enjoy lengthy hikes, leisurely strolls and fine regional specialities. Explore the historic heart of Poschiavo, centred around its pleasant piazza, and discover various aspects of the valley's history in one of the museums or the colourful "Spanish Quarter" built by returning emigrants. Soaking up the beautiful scenery at the Lago di Poschiavo makes a fitting end to a memorable trip.
This viaduct turns round a 360-degree curve, lengthening the track so that it is possible to overcome the difference in altitude in the narrow Valposchiavo. The Brusio Circular Viaduct is considered the most spectacular construction on the Bernina Line.
