National Park Zernez

On the tracks of our heraldic animal

The National Park in the Engadin – the only one of its kind in Switzerland – provides a safe haven for ibex, chamois, deer and marmots. Even the magnificent bearded vulture has been restored to its natural habitat here. You can find out everything you need to know about the flora and fauna in the National Park Centre at Zernez.

The Parc Naziunal Svizzer is magnificent: ibex, mountain hares, red deer, Northern vipers and wolves live here. Even bears are once again returning to the region. And of course, people can also be spotted in this unique Swiss habitat: many kilometres of hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty lead hikers and wildlife spotters, non-experts and geologists through the wild, romantic landscape.

Visitors of all ages can find out everything they need to know about flora and fauna in the National Park Centre at Zernez. Young explorers can head off on the Champlönch Children's Trail, armed with a digital guide.

The RhB Combi-Ticket includes travel to Zernez and back, entry to the visitor centre and return travel to Buffalora by PostBus.

Hiking tip: In autumn, large numbers of deer gather on the slopes of Val Truppchun.

Experience animals in the wild and unique flora and fauna in the National Park Zernez.

National Park Centre Zernez

The monolithic building stands in Zernez at the gateway to the National Park: the National Park visitor centre is the heart and soul of the Parc Naziunal. It houses informative exhibitions on flora and fauna. Ask at the information desk for hiking tips and find out where you have the best change of spotting animals.

Val Trupchun circular hike

On this roughly three-hour hike, you have a good chance of spotting animals in their natural habit. From S-chanf the route takes you along the valley, mostly on flat paths or choose the more comfortable variant with the Express Parc Naziunel. From June to October rides the little train daily from S-chanf train station to the stop Varusch, the entrance to the Swiss National Park. The colours on show are particularly spectacular in autumn when yellow larch and green spruce vie to outdo one another.

Champlönch Children's Trail

This way, hiking is twice as fun: equipped with the iWebpark app and the Children's Trail booklet you can set off on a hike in the National Park. At ten locations along the trail an animal or figure will appear on the display and tell an interesting story – and you'll discover things you otherwise wouldn't get to see. The trail starts off at car park 1 at Ova Spin (Champlönch bus stop) and leads to Il Fuorn.

Classic nature trail

Especially for families: on this stroll through unspoilt nature, 45 information boards provide details and explanations of the flora and fauna that can be seen in the National Park. The plants described can often be found close by. The trail starts by the Hotel Parc Naziunal Il Fuorn and can be reached by postbus.

Schmelzra Museum

From bears to the history of mining: listen to tales involving bears or take a guided tour of the medieval network of mining tunnels in S-charl, where lead ore and silver were once mined. The museum is surrounded by woods previously inhabited by the last bears in Switzerland.

Bear discovery trail

«Master Bruin» will capture your undivided attention for two whole hours. At nine interactive posts you can discover all sorts of interesting facts about brown bears and their astonishing skills. The trail is located in Val S-charl. It's pawsitively amazing!
