Graubünden Valais trail

Following in the footsteps of the Valais people

The Valais people left the Upper Valais region more than 700 years ago to trek over the seven and more mountains to the Swiss canton of Graubünden. The Valais trail retraces their path in 19 stages from San Bernardino to St. Antönien. Choose one of five tours; RhB transports your luggage along the long-distance hiking trail.

The reasons why the Valais people left the Upper Valais region are still unclear. Perhaps because of the beauty of Graubünden? A definite possibility as hikers can see as they follow the trail through wonderful Alpine valleys, perfect cultural landscapes and lonesome settlements across Switzerland's largest canton. Enjoy traditional Valais fare, give yourself an intellectual kick by visiting local history museums and listen attentively to the stories the locals have to tell. Wherever possible, RhB takes care of getting your luggage to wherever you have chosen to next spend the night.

Tomül Pass

The views from up here are simply amazing: reaching from the valleys of Safien and Vals to the Tödi mountain range. The picture shows the view to the east from the Tomül Pass towards Piz Anarosa.

Safien Valley

The intact natural landscape of the valley is dominated by the culture of the Walser people and their typically scattered settlements. This is a place to find peace and forget about time. Recommended: a break in the 300-year-old rooms of the Restaurant Tuurahus.

Wooden church at Obermutten

The little wooden church at Obermutten is a cultural highlight of the Walser trail. Probably the only wooden place of worship in Switzerland, the almost 300-year-old church is one of the country's most beautiful sacred buildings, an ideal place for contemplation and reflection. Simply ask for the keys to the church in the Restaurant Post next door.

Drostobel Trail Jenisberg

From Jenisberg to Filisur, the spectacular Walser hiking trail passes through gullies and ravines and along imposing, rugged scree slopes. At the steepest parts of the route there are steps and cables to hold onto.

Strassberg high moor

This high moor and marshland has much to offer: as ecologically important, completely unspoilt terrain, hiking across the landscape on the beautiful meadow path is a privilege for both body and soul. High moors have protected status and are of national importance.
