The Green Power Trail between Ospizio Bernina and the Glacier Garden of Cavaglia lets you see how electricity is generated – and reveals why the RhB is closely linked with power production in the Bernina area.
What exactly is green power? And how is this energy from renewable sources produced? This informative trail between Ospizio Bernina and Cavaglia features twelve panels narrating the story of electricity in this region.
And as well as learning about ecological power generation, you will also discover fascinating facts about the diversity of nature around you and about the glacier mills at Cavaglia where, over the course of millennia, the pressure of the glacier water caused rotating stones to gouge their way into the rock forming wells up to 12-metres deep – and all of this 11,000 years ago!
This high-altitude hike runs alongside idyllic Lago Bianco, before winding its way through the Palü Gorge. Finally, enjoy a glass of Veltliner wine on the sun terrace at Alp Grüm – what better way to recharge your batteries?
Blick auf die Haltestelle Alp Grüm
The legendary buckwheat pizzoccheri of the Restaurant Alp Grüm are an absolute must on the Green Power Trail.
The Albula and Bernina section of track is a masterpiece in terms of civil engineering and routing. Landscape and railway blend into one: in wide radiuses, ingenious man-made structures punctuate rugged valleys. The Landwasser Viaduct, the helical tunnels between Bergün and Preda and the Brusio Circular Viaduct all stand testimony to the early, pioneering days of the railway.
The highest point on the RhB is situated 2,253 metres above sea level. The watershed between Lago Bianco and Lej Nair is also the language frontier between the Romansh-speaking Engadine and the Italian-speaking Valposchiavo. The Bistro Albergo at the railway station was renovated in 2013 and serves tasty snacks at teatime.
During the Ice Age some 11,000 years ago, the Palü Glacier formed a glacial hollow here. The glacier mills at Caviglia are ten metres deep and five metres wide. The ice has left behind a fascinating landscape full of natural sculptures, which can now be reached directly by rail. Experts will guide you round, providing fascinating details.
