Are the GA travelcard / 1-day travelpass / 1-month travelpass valid for Rhaetian Railway?

Is the FIP free pass valid for Rhaetian Railway?

The «Swiss Private Railways» free pass is valid. However, you still have to pay for the seat reservation and supplement (no concessions). During the booking procedure, at the step «Travellers», choose «Ticket available» under Ticket/reduction. 

Is the Interrail Pass valid for Rhaetian Railway?

Yes, seat reservations/supplements on the Bernina Express and Glacier Express must, however, be paid additionally (no concessions). During the booking procedure, at the step «Travellers», choose «Interrail Pass» under Ticket/reduction.

Is the graubündenPASS valid for Rhaetian Railway?

The graubündenPASS is valid on all trains and post buses in the canton of Graubünden. Seat reservations/supplements on the Bernina and Glacier Express must, however, be paid additionally (no concessions). In the “Travellers” step of the booking procedure, choose “GA travelcard” under Reduction.

Is the BÜGA valid for Rhaetian Railway?

The BÜGA is valid on all trains and post buses in the canton of Graubünden. Seat reservations/supplements on the Bernina and Glacier Express must, however, be paid additionally (no concessions). In the “Travellers” step of the booking procedure, choose “GA travelcard” under Reduction.

Why can't I select the travel date I want?

The desired date is outside the booking period. Tickets cannot be purchased online until two months before the planned journey.

How can I change/cancel my online ticket?

Online tickets cannot be changed or cancelled.

How can I buy an online-ticket for my child under six?

Children under 6 years do not need a ticket, they travel free of charge.

Questions about reservations

I am already in possession of a valid ticket. How can I make a reservation without having to pay for the ticket again?

You can make your reservation conveniently here. During the booking procedure, at the step «Travellers», choose «Reservation only» under Ticket/reduction.

How can I change/cancel my online booking?

Online tickets cannot be changed or cancelled.

How do I reserve a seat in a panoramic car?

All bookable seats are located in panoramic cars. You can make your booking directly here.

How do I reserve a wheelchair space?

Why can't I select the travel date I want?

The desired date is outside the booking period. Reservations on the Bernina Express can be booked 6 months in advance. The deadline for advance bookings for the Glacier Express is 93 days.

PLEASE NOTE: Excellence Class on the Glacier Express can be booked for the entire timetable period.

I have not received a confirmation e-mail including my travel documents.

Please check the spam folder of your e-mail in-box. If you have not received an e-mail with the travel documents, please contact the Rhaetian Railway Railservice by mail at railservice(at)rhb.ch or on +41 (0)81 288 65 65 

Once payment is successful, the message "Ticket being issued, please wait" appears and remains on screen.

Check your e-mail in-box to see whether you have received an e-mail with the travel documents. If you have not received an e-mail with the travel documents, please contact the Rhaetian Railway Railservice by mail at railservice(at)rhb.ch or on +41 (0)81 288 65 65 

My booking was interrupted, but my credit card has been charged: what should I do?

Please send an e-mail to railservice(at)rhb.ch, providing the following details:

  • What credit card number was charged? (Please state name of cardholder and the last four numbers of the card)
  • What amount was charged in CHF?
  • At what time was the card charged? (Date and time, as exact as possible)

We will check the charge to your credit card and refund the amount to your credit card if you have been unduly charged.

How can I reserve seats in the direction of travel?

The direction of travel of the coaches is unknown because the coaches can be added at both ends of the train. If booking for more than one person, we recommend reserving seats opposite one another.

How can I reserve seats on a specific side of the train?

The direction of travel of the coaches is unknown because the coaches can be added at both ends of the train. Thanks to the large panoramic windows, you are able to enjoy perfect views from both sides of the train.

Are dogs allowed?

Dogs are allowed on regional trains and on the Bernina Express. They do not require a seat reservation. Dogs pay half the price of a 2nd class ticket.

PLEASE NOTE: Dogs are not allowed on the Glacier Express.

I am unable to make an online booking. Are there any alternative ways to book?

You can make your booking by calling the Rhaetian Railway Railservice on +41 (0)81 288 65 65. Bookings can also be made at all European rail outlets. Please note it is possible to reserve from three months in advance.

I do not have a credit card. Are there any alternative ways to book?

You can proceed as follows:

  • Another person, who holds a credit card, can make the reservation for you.
  • Bookings can also be made at all European rail outlets for cash. Please note it is possible to reserve from three months in advance.

I already have a reservation, but not a ticket. Will my seats remain reserved or will my booking lapse?

Your reservation will remain valid, even without a ticket. However, you must be able to present a ticket to go with your reservation on board the train. You can buy tickets over the counter or from ticket machines two months in advance. It is also possible to buy the tickets online.

Do I have to pay the reservation fee for both the outward and return journey?

Yes, a reservation/supplement has to be purchased for each leg of the journey.

How can I reserve a seat for my child under six?

Children under the age of six travel free of charge but do not have the right to their own seat. If you want your child to have an individual seat, you need to buy a valid ticket. During the booking procedure, at the step «Travellers», choose «Reservation only» under Reduction and buy a 1-day travel pass for children at the ticket office.

I have a booking in second class; can I change to first class?

Online bookings cannot be changed. However, you have the possibility to make a new reservation and to change the class of ticket at the ticket office before departure.

I have a booking in first class; can I change to second class?

Online bookings cannot be changed. However, you can pay for a change of class at the ticket office and use 1st class. If you are already in possession of a 1st class ticket, you can simply purchase a new reservation in 2nd class. The 1st class ticket is valid.

Questions about the Bernina Express

Where can I find the timetable?

What is the difference between the Bernina Express and regional trains?

The Bernina Express has air-conditioned panoramic cars with large windows extending right into the roof cove. Information on the route is also provided via loudspeaker. A seat reservation is required and a supplement is charged. You can buy your reservation conveniently online here. 

The regional trains are made up of standard coaches with ordinary windows. It is not possible to reserve seats on regional trains and no supplement is payable. You can find the timetable for the regional trains here.

Can I interrupt my journey?

It is generally possible to interrupt a journey. However, please note that you must continue your onward travel on the same day. If you want to resume your journey on board the Bernina Express, you will have to make a new reservation and a new supplement will be charged.

If continuing your journey on regional trains no reservation / no supplement is required.

Which coaches are panoramic cars?

All reservable seats on the Bernina Express are located in panoramic cars.

What is the difference between 1st and 2nd class?

1st class

In 1st class you benefit from generous space and plenty of leg room. 1st class offers generous, comfortable single and double seats. Thanks to the lower number of passengers per coach, your journey is quieter and more relaxed.

2nd class

2nd class offers comfortable double seats with sufficient leg room.

Is it possible to dine on board the Bernina Express?

The Bernina Express does not have a dining car. However, regional snacks and warm and cold drinks are available from the mini-bar service. The Bernina Express reaches Poschiavo / Tirano or St. Moritz around lunchtime. There are many restaurants available in both towns.

Is an identity card with a renewal stamp valid for crossing the border?

Where can I park my car?

All Rhaetian Railway stations have payable parking spaces nearby. You can find information on parking facilities at the individual stations here.

Does the Bernina Express leave from special stations or from the usual stations of the Rhaetian Railway?

The Bernina Express departs from the usual stations of the Rhaetian Railway, from which the regional trains also leave.

Please note: The Bernina Express does not stop at all stations.

It is not possible to interrupt a journey. It is forbidden by law to board or alight from the bus along the route and therefore not possible.

No. However, the bus does make a toilet stop about halfway through the journey.
