Hiking with the RhB - our five favourite hikes

With the warmer temperatures, the hiking season also starts in Graubünden. In our new tour portal you can find inspiration for future hikes that are accessible by RhB. We present our five favourite hikes to you.

1 From Ilanz to Versam through the Rhine Gorge

You will enjoy a comfy journey on RhB from Chur to Ilanz. This way you can marvel at the impressive Rhine Gorge as you arrive. The open scenic carriages of the Rhine Gorge Experience train, which operates every Saturday and Sunday between Landquart and Ilanz, will guarantee you a breath of fresh air and some great photos. Don your hiking boots once you are in Ilanz and get going – always along the Anterior Rhine Versam-Safien where you can eat in a cosy restaurant. From Versam-Safien station, you can take a comfortable ride back to Chur with RhB through the “Swiss Grand Canyon”.

2 The mounds of Domat/Ems and high above the Rhine

You don’t always have to go up high. There are also beautiful hikes at lower altitudes: these are particularly suitable for spring when there is still snow at higher altitudes. For example, do you know the mounds of Domat/Ems? The hills were created from the Flims rockslide, Kunkels and Calanda, and can be found all over the village. From Domat/Ems railway station, the route first takes you to the Tuma Casti with its castle dating from 1250, then on to the beautiful golf course, the Vogelsang and Reichenau-Tamins railway station. From there you can see where the Anterior Rhine meets the Posterior Rhine. Once you have arrived in Tamins, you have a good view of the Rhine. Walk downhill until you reach Domat/Ems. From here, our trains take hikers to Chur in just a few minutes.

3 From the Alp Languard to Pontresina via the Paradis Hütte

This hike takes you to new heights. The journey to get there on RhB is an experience in itself: this way you can take in the UNESCO World Heritage route through the window, travel through tunnels and over bridges and viaducts. These views never fail to amaze. In Pontresina, you continue by chair lift which will take you up to 2,326 metres above sea level. It is worth taking your binoculars with you because there is a lot to discover: marmots, various kinds of birds and even ibexes. Enjoy refreshments in the Paradis Hütte, where you can marvel at the fantastic view of the impressive Bernina range. One last look through your binoculars and then back to Pontresina.

This is where you will find the description of the hike.

The ibexes of Pontresina can be seen very closely on this hike with a bit of luck.

4 Leisurely hike from Guarda to Ardez

Storybook villages: from Guarda, the Schellenursli village (from the book “A Bell for Ursli”), you take a small flat road to Ardez where you can experience Romanesque living culture. The hike takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes and is mainly downhill. You can take one of the hourly connections to Guarda on RhB. Then you climb aboard the PostBus to get to the village. If you still have some time left, take a leisurely stroll through the village and marvel at the typical local buildings.

5 From Lenzerheide to the bears in Arosa

The ideal family hike because it can be shortened using one of multiple mountain railways. After all the little ones need to save their energy for the Bear Sanctuary in Arosa.

You take the PostBus from Chur to the Rothornbahn stop and, from there, the cable car up to the midway terminus. Hikers don’t need to walk far to reach the valley station of the Weisshorn Speed chairlift. Having arrived at the mountain station, a second short walk will take you to the Urdenfürggli, where your journey continues: by Urdenbahn cable car. This takes hikers to the Hörnli where you will then take the Hörnli-Express gondola cable car to Inner Arosa.

Now, you can either walk through the village or take the local bus to the Weisshorn cable car. This will take you to the Arosa Bear Sanctuary where the little ones will be rewarded by a fantastic playground and the visitors’ platform. To travel back, take RhB from Arosa to Chur: you can consolidate what you have learned about bears on the bear sanctuary train  (please note there is a replacement rail service between Arosa and Litzirüti).
