Transporting your bicycle: some useful tips

Things worth knowing

  • Each passenger is allowed to transport one bicycle.
  • Tandems and recumbent bikes must be accompanied by two paying passengers.
  • Children’s and other bike trailers count as a bicycle, and require the purchase of a ticket. Bike trailers must be loaded unpacked.
  • No cycling on the platforms! Please dismount and push your bike.
  • Please note that you are not allowed to cycle over the train tracks.

Bicycle transport

  • It pays to establish a routine for your loading operation. You might find it easier, for example, if one person deals with children and luggage while the over sees to getting the bikes loaded.
  • The bikes and associated items carried must be of a weight and size that allows for their trouble-free loading and unloading. Bicycles and associated items must be loaded and unloaded by the passenger(s) concerned, without any outside assistance.
  • Bicycles must not be loaded packed with luggage. Saddlebags and luggage must be removed in good time for loading.
  • «Oxtails» and trailers must be detached from the towing bicycle.
  • Passengers are not allowed into the baggage car during the journey.
  • The transporting of own bicycles is not allowed for groups of ten or more passengers. Groups such as those travelling on school excursions are recommended to rent bicycles at their destination. For further information, please go to www.rentabike.ch or see the brochure entitled «Touring with a rented bicycle». If your group nevertheless wishes to travel with its own cycles, these should be checked in as luggage. We will then transport the cycles to any station with baggage-handling facilities.

Notifying us
Please tell the train guard that you are transporting bicycles, and notify him or her in advance of where you intend to get off. Our staff will be pleased to advise you and help ensure your safety when unloading.

Unloading your bicycle
Be sure to report in good time to the bike platform or baggage car, so that you have sufficient time to unload. (Please note, however, that travel in the baggage car is not permitted).

Liability
Self-loaded/unloaded bicycles belong to the category of «hand luggage subject to extra payment». The person carrying out the loading and unloading is responsible for the item(s) handled. The railway shall only be liable for contractual infringement or negligence on its part.

The Graubünden region is highly hospitable. Many hotels also offer a luggage forwarding service right to the hotel.

Trouble-free travel to Germany, France, Luxembourg or Austria. «Trouble-free» because there is no need to worry about your luggage. Just four working days is all it takes for your luggage to be sped to its destination address. (We regret that we are unable to dispatch to railway stations or airports in Germany, France and Austria). Transported luggage can weigh up to 25 kilos per item, with maximum dimensions of 100 x 60 x 30 cm. Your railway station can double as an airport. Luggage destined for flights (and weighing up to 32 kilos) can be conveniently checked in at certain railway stations. Your boarding card is issued at the same time, i.e. you avoid queues and can forget having to drag your luggage around the airport. Our luggage check-in and boarding card service costs CHF 20.00 per item of luggage, (CHF 10.00 without luggage check-in). (Discounts are available on regular «Swiss» flights for First and Business Class passengers, Miles&More members, «Hon Circle», «Senator» and «Frequent Travellers».) If you cannot check in for any reason, we can also send your luggage to the SBB counter at the airport by express despatch for just CHF 20.00 per item. This service is available at railway stations with RhB Check-in and also at Pontresina, Samedan and Scuol-Tarasp. Check-in deadlines: For regular flights, normally 24 hours before departure; for charter flights, normally from 4 pm on the previous day - nor more than 24 hours before departure. Click here to display a list of participating airlines. What’s more: For reasons of security, please note that these objects are excluded from our transport service.

From anywhere in the world, your luggage can be forwarded via the airports at Zurich or Geneva to any one of nine railway stations in the Graubünden region - without any further action on your part. Forget about dragging luggage around. Note that conventional luggage (with a maximum weight of up to 32 kilos) must not contain articles - including duty free items - that were acquired or obtained abroad. This service costs CHF 20.00 per item of luggage. (Discounts are available on regular «Swiss» flights for First and Business Class passengers, Miles&More members, «Hon Circle», «Senator» and «Frequent Travellers».)
