Arosa Line - 1000 meters in just one hour

Your journey gets off to a leisurely start in Chur, as the train trundles past the town wall, the Malteser Tower and the Upper Gate. But the rails quickly leave the bustling town and continue on into the surrounding countryside. The line of the Red Train turns into a mountain railway. The train seems to float in the air as it crosses the elegantly-designed Langwieser Viaduct.

It takes just over 16 miles (26 km) for the Arosa Line to climb more than 3,200 feet (1,000 metres). In its final feat of strength, the train tackles - without the use of any rack mechanism - the steep section from St. Peter to the attractive holiday resort of Graubünden, at 1,800 metres above sea level.

Enjoy your free day in the mountain spa resort of Arosa. The all-inclusive Arosa Card (CHF 13.00) includes such free amenities and attractions as mountain railways, local buses, lakeside bathing or boat rental. The card is available at the railway station railway station for CHF 10.00

Ideal for: families, bons vivants and sporting types.

Sightseeing attractions: The old town of Chur (the cathedral, Roman archaeological excavations, the Rhaetian Museum), the Langwieser Viaduct, the Bergkirchli church in Arosa.
