Bernina Express - The historic line

The most beautiful way of crossing the Alps: the Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway. The railway connects northern and southern Europe in a uniquely beautiful way.

This amazing experience, which offers views of mighty glaciers and a link between the towering beauty of the Alps and the joie de vivre of the Latin south, can be enjoyed on the Bernina Express. Since summer 2008, the section between Thusis and Tirano has been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A trademark.

The Bernina Express. A legend. The best connection between the icy north and the sunny south. A connection that runs through the ancient landscape of Switzerland’s beautiful Graubünden. The Flash map of the Rhaetian Railway gives you a detailed overview of each route.

The Bernina Express runs between Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland, and the village of Tirano in the picturesque region of Veltlin. Such is the simple expression of this pleasurable experience, not counting the 55 tunnels and 196 bridges, or the inclines of up to one in seven that are virtually in the territory normally operated by rack railways. All this is in addition to the glaciers and palm trees, the top cultural sites and picturesque villages – plus the feeling of freedom and open space that you experience in our observation cars, with their panoramic views of the unique surrounding countryside.
Click on the interactive Flash map to discover more about the sites of cultural interest and outstanding natural beauty that are to be found along the Albula and Bernina lines. The map also shows the routes of the Rhaetian Railway, along with all their tunnels and bridges. The interactive map, which you can zoom in and out of at will, does not just offer an innovative overview of the Albula and Bernina lines. It is also a comprehensive work of reference, but without any need for laborious searching and scrolling through pages of text. One click is all it takes to display the required information. The superimposed text windows can also be enlarged and reduced as required.
