Bernina Express - along the UNESCO World Heritage line at 20 mph (30 km/h)

The Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway are one of the most spectacular ways to cross the Alps. This zigzagging mountain railway connects northern and southern Europe without the use of any toothed-wheel mechanism. A particular high-point of the ride is the panoramic view from the Bernina Express, as it passes the mighty glaciers and the highest mountain in Graubünden outside Chur on its descent to Tirano’s swaying palms.

The train makes short work of the 55 Tunnels, 196 bridges and slopes of up to 70 millimetres per metre of incline that are found along its route. Since summer 2008, the section between Thusis and Tirano has been classed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. A milestone in our history. The year 2010 sees the celebration of the line’s hundredth anniversary, with four main events and special things to see and do on each of the year’s 365 days. Come and join in!

Bernina Express Bus
Would you like to sample some southern charm? The new Bernina Express Bus takes visitors onwards from Tirano, through the vineyards of Veltlin and along the banks of Lake Como to Lugano (in both directions).

Ideal for: bons vivants, lovers of culture and families.

Sightseeing attractions: UNESCO World Heritage route with the Landwasser Viaduct and the winding tunnels between Bergün and Preda, the Circular Viaduct at Brusio, Ospizio Bernina, Alp Grüm, the Palü and Morteratsch glaciers and the old town of Poschiavo.

The Bernina Express. A legend. The best connection between the icy north and the sunny south. A connection that runs through the ancient landscape of Switzerland’s beautiful Graubünden. The Flash map of the Rhaetian Railway gives you a detailed overview of each route.

The Bernina Express runs between Chur, the oldest town in Switzerland, and the village of Tirano in the picturesque region of Veltlin. Such is the simple expression of this pleasurable experience, not counting the 55 tunnels and 196 bridges, or the inclines of up to one in seven that are virtually in the territory normally operated by rack railways. All this is in addition to the glaciers and palm trees, the top cultural sites and picturesque villages - plus the feeling of freedom and open space that you experience in our observation cars, with their panoramic views of the unique surrounding countryside.
Click on the interactive Flash map to discover more about the sites of cultural interest and outstanding natural beauty that are to be found along the Albula and Bernina lines. The map also shows the routes of the Rhaetian Railway, along with all their tunnels and bridges. The interactive map, which you can zoom in and out of at will, does not just offer an innovative overview of the Albula and Bernina lines. It is also a comprehensive work of reference, but without any need for laborious searching and scrolling through pages of text. One click is all it takes to display the required information. The superimposed text windows can also be enlarged and reduced as required.

The red bus: Every end is also a beginning. The Bernina Line ends just over the border in Tirano, where the tour begins. The new Bernina Express Bus takes you along the scenic route from Tirano to Lugano (in either direction), letting you see the region of Veltlin in all its glory. This route, which runs through picturesque villages, past swaying palms and along the banks of Lake Como, offers the full “southern experience”.

Route details
Your journey through the Veltlin region begins in Tirano. This renowned Italian valley, which spreads up in a wide curve into the mountains of the Swiss canton of Graubünden, is famous for its fine wines. Gravedona, Menaggio, Dongo - even the names of the small towns along the route create an enchanting harmony of nature and culture. Your view is also drawn along the way to the pretty coves and quaint fishing villages that dot the banks of Lake Como. We pass along the narrow waterside roads of Lake Lugano on our way to the Swiss border and our destination in the town of Lugano, which gives the lake its name. Lying at the feet of Monte Bré and Monte San Salvatore, Lugano is not only the cultural hub of the region of Tessin; it is also a favourite tourist destination in its own right.
